On 20 November 2023, media outlet the Ayin News Network reported clashes between the SAF and the RSF around oil fields in East Darfur. On the same date, a pro-RSF Facebook account posted a video of a group of armed men celebrating the alleged takeover of the oilfield, with a large, black plume of smoke in the background. Sudan Witness geolocated the video to the northeastern section of the Sufyan oil field in East Darfur (figure 2). This is five km northwest of Gad es Sid, the nearest settlement, and approximately 60 kilometres (km) northeast of Ed Daein, the capital of East Darfur state (see figure 1).
